Extrajudicial killings are being passed off as shootouts, says rights organisation Ain o Salish Kendra.
As many as 362 people fell victims to extrajudicial killings in the last 11 months, the organisation’s Executive Director Shipa Hafiz said while reading out a statement during a human chain demonstration at Dhaka’s Asadgate on Tuesday (Dec 10).
She said that bypassing the concerns of the United Nations and other human rights organisations, extrajudicial killings are being publicised as shootouts.
“Outrageous human rights violations such as extrajudiciary killings, disappearances, abuse, bar on freedom of speech and thinking, abuse of children and women, murder and rape are continuing,” she said.
She added that these violations are increasing more due to lack of accountability and the long process of achieving justice.
According to the organisation the Constitution provisions for a person’s right to trial and justice no matter what the crime and the extrajudicial killings have not only opened avenues for law enforcers to abuse power but also strengthened the lack of faith on the rule of law.
Ain o Salish Kendra data says that 13 people disappeared this year among whom four came back and one was shown arrested.
It also said that in the last 11 months, 351 women were raped, 443 children killed, 940 children raped while 682 children became victims of abuse.
The rights organisation claimed that lack of swift trial is making justice harder to achieve.
Moreover, the Digital Security Act was passed despite strong protests, which has increased the misuse of section 57 of the ICT Act.
The organisation further alleged that the government and state are “avoiding responsibility” to reserve the human rights of the people and the sustainable goals can be reached when development is inclusive and just.
