The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested one person over the mysterious death of Stamford University student Rubaiyat Sharmin Rumpa.
Abdur Rahman Saikat who was picked up by DB’s south unit Ramna Zone team on Saturday (Dec 7) was shown arrested on Sunday (Dec 8), confirmed DMP Deputy Commissioner (media) Masudur Rahman.
Meanwhile, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate court granted the police four days to grill him in custody.
DB police inspector Shah Akhtaruzzaman Ilias produced Saikat in court seeking a seven-day remand against which four was granted.
According to sources, Rumpa had been seeing Saikat in the beginning of this year, but they broke up by late March. Since then, Rumpa had been trying to get back with him, which the youth refused.
On Dec 4, police recovered the body of the 21-year-old, a second-year student of Stamford University's English department, from 68 Siddheswari Circular Road, behind Ayesha Complex around 11pm.
Ramna police opened a case in this regard and the autopsy was performed at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue (DMC) on Dec 5.
Forensic experts said that the victim sustained multiple fractures in her body which indicates she died after falling off a multi-storey building.
