Dengue cases show decline since Aug 21

Hospitals across Bangladesh are at breaking point with hundreds being admitted every day with dengue. The number of patients is rising alarmingly with this being the worst outbreak to hit the country.The number of reported dengue cases have fallen in the last seven days by 327 till Aug 27, says the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

According to the estimates given by Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room, despite the inconsistency in the number reported on each day, the average number of cases recorded between Aug 21 and Aug 27 shows a decline.

The number of cases reported across the country stood at 1,626 on Aug 21 while the number has fallen to 1,299 on Tuesday (Aug 27).

DGHS Disease Control Centre Director Professor Sanya Tahmina revealed the information at a media call held at the directorate on Tuesday.

However, the estimates given for the last 24 hours have shown a rise in the numbers by 48.

A total of 1,299 dengue patients have been admitted to different hospitals across Bangladesh in the last 24 hours, which stood at 1,251 on the day before.

Among them, 608 patients were admitted in Dhaka and 691 in districts outside Dhaka. 

On Monday (Aug 26), 577 cases were reported in Dhaka and 678 cases outside the capital.

The DGHS said that the number of admitted patients currently undergoing treatment in government and private hospitals combined is 5,322.

Since January 1 till Aug 27, a total of 66,064 people have been infected with the dengue virus.

Among those admitted, a total of 60,569 have been released from their respective hospitals and clinics after treatment.

Government sources have confirmed the deaths of 52 patients although unofficial numbers stand at 173.
