Tipu Mia used to issue letters to various institutions in the name of the Inspector General of Bangladesh Police.
In the letters, he would ask institutions to pay for banners, festoons, posters and leaflets which would be put up and distributed in various parts of the country, including Dhaka.
The cheat was caught when he went to collect money using such tactics from Southeast University.
The airport zonal team of the Detective Branch (north) arrested Tipu from Paltan of Dhaka at 10pm on Wednesday (Jul 31).
Additional Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Abdul Baten disclosed the information at a media briefing held at the DMP media centre on Thursday (Aug 1).
Abdul Baten said, “Tipu Mia alias Mominul Hoque had been using the names of not only the IGP but also other police unit chiefs and high ranking officials.”
“He would use the names of police officials and forge their signatures to ask for money from various private educational and financial institutions,” added the additional commissioner.
“He would pressurized these institutions into paying up the money by using the police logo, names of officials and letterheads. When the money was not paid, he would threaten them,” he said.
Quoting the information provided by Tipu during primary interrogation, Deputy Commissioner of DB (north) Moshiur Rahman said, “Tipu developed his skills to con people during his employment at TM Traders where he was responsible for dispatching letters.”
“He later left his job and began extorting various institutions during various police anniversaries and public holidays,” he added.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of the DB (airport zone) Muharram Ali said that a case had been filed against Tipu Mia with Paltan Police in this connection.
