Stay order on Khaleda’s bail in Cumilla murder case

Former PM and BNP chief Khaleda Zia is serving a five-year term at the old jailhouse on Najimuddin Road in Old Dhaka.The Appellate Division stayed the High Court’s (HC) bail order to the BNP Chief Khaleda Zia on a murder case pressed in Cumilla.
The top court also instructed to dispose the rule regarding the case within four weeks.
The Appellate Division led by the Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the injunction after settling the state’s leave to appeal regarding the HC’s bail on Monday.
Khaleda Zia’s legal counsels, advocate AJ Mohammad Ali, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Barrister AHM Ehsanur Rahman and the Attorney General Mahbubey Alam were present at the courtroom.
The case dates back to Jan 25, 2015 when a covered van was set on fire and vandalised in Chauddagram during a long-term strike called by the BNP-led alliance. Later, a case was filed with the Chauddagram Police Station under the Special Powers Act.
Police pressed charges in the case on Feb 14, 2017, accusing 32 persons, including Khaleda.
