A proposal has been made to the district administration to release funds to take possession of land for extension of Matuail Sanitary Landfill. Once the proposal is approved, district administration will begin land acquisition.
DDC source cays: at present, 2700 to 3200 tonnes of waste is produced every day, with current land at Matuail deemed inadequate.
At this state, DCC has taken the initiative to produce power from treated garbage; last year, the project was approved at ECNEC.
After the PM instructed Dhaka north and south city corporations to tackle recklessly dumped rubbish on roads and alleys, plans were taken to establish fire place at every city ward to incinerate waste.
However, the city does not have enough space to construct fire places.
Therefore, a project has been taken to develop landfills.
DNCC assistant engineer (waste) AHM Abdullah Harun told Bangla Tribune: “after assessment, south city corporation has taken the step to build an incinerator at Matuail.”
This will have two chambers: one to burn general waste and the other for electronic rubbish.
The extract after incineration will be used to make coal, he added, which will be used as refuse derived fuel, and can be used for cooking at households.
To give material form to the refuse-derived fuel project, 81.09 acres of land will be needed. For the land acquisition, Tk 514 crore has been earmarked. From the added land, 50 acres will be used for dumping waste and the rest to accommodate the incinerator.
Japan, China, South Korea and the USA and other international agencies have expressed the desire to provide funds for this project, said, Abdullah Harun.
He further said that this will not pollute the environment since the project will be similar to a brick kiln.
“There will be a long chimney for smoke release.”
Once this is completed, we won’t have to worry about waste disposal for the next fifty years, said the engineer.
