BNP Central Executive Committee member Mizan Rahman Mizan has been arrested on charges of sabotaging the Gazipur City Corporation election, say police.
A retired Bangladesh Army major, Mizan was picked up by detectives from his home in Dhaka’s Gulshan early on Tuesday after audio clips of his phone conversations were leaked on the internet.
Gulshan police OC Abu Bakar Siddique told Bangla Tribune, “It was not a police raid, rather a Detective Branch operation. They might have apprehended him.”
The BNP leader was live on Facebook when the law enforcing agencies raided his residence.
Dhaka Metropolitan Deputy Commissioner Mashiur Rahman told Bangla Tribune, Mizan is accused in multiple cases.
About the sabotage in Gazipur polls, he said, a case under ICT Act will be filed against him.
A YouTube channel styled ‘Conspiracy Link’ uploaded the audio clips of conversation between Mizan and Syful Islam, a Jubodal leader at Shimulia union in Ashulia, confirmed intelligence sources.
Mizan is heard asking the person to hire three men who can roam around the city posing as Awami League supporters “wearing badges and a banner with polls symbol Boat”
Mizan asked to choose people who “are involved with the Awami League, but actually supports the BNP”.
The man would be given “cash and equipment” to carry out the job, he was heard saying.
In the audio clip, Mizan was instructed the three men to post in a house, “better if a two-storey building” nearby a polling station. It was not clear what the task was.
In the other audio, people were heard discussing updates on hiring the men and renting the house.
At the end of the audio conversation, Mizan was heard saying: “You will come to Dhaka after fixing them [the hired men] a car. I will provide the training for them. Did I make myself clear?”
Mizan was also heard saying that he would confirm later where the hired men will be brought — Uttara or Gulshan.
