A special tribunal in Dhaka has sentenced two people to death and eight other to life in prison in a case filed for kidnapping a minor boy in city in 2015.
Judge Md Khadem Ul Kayes of Dhaka’s Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-7 handed the order on Thursday (May 16).
The death row convicts are Moshiur Rahman Montu, 40, and Mizanur Rahman alias Mizan Matubbar, 35.
The court fined the duo Tk 50,000 each. Failure to pay the fine would result in an additional three month in jail.
The convicts, who get the life terms are; Md Razzaul Karim, 36, Nazrul Islam, 32, Abdullah Al Mamun alias Abdullah, 38, Iqbal Hossain Shuvo, 28, Sajeeb Ahmed Kamal Uddin, 47, Mohammad Alim Hossain Chandan Chanchal, 27, Kawsar Mridha, 25, and Md Reza Mridha, 30.
The court fined them Tk 20,000 each. Failure to pay the fine would result in an additional two month in jail.
The tribunal also acquitted two of the accused as evidence against them went unproved.
According to the case documents, on May 2, 2015, madrasa student Abir was returning to his home at the city Kafrul from his institution riding their family car. Abir was accompanied by driver Zahid, and caretaker of his house Abu Bakkar.
When the vehicle on Banabi Staff road, the convicts intercepted the car and picked up them and left the area by another vehicle. The kidnappers, however, released Zahid, and Abu Bakkar on the midway.
Later, they demanded Tk 100 million in ransom to Abir’s family for his release or else threatened to kill the boy.
Family paid Tk 20 million in ransom before Abir was rescued near the city’s Kurmitola General Hospital.
Later in May of 2015, Abir’s uncle filed a case with the Cantonment police.
On Sept 27, 2015, police pressed charges in the case.
The court recorded deposition of as many as 30 witnesses in the case before giving its verdict on Thursday.
