The High Court has ordered government officials and the media not to label anyone as a fake freedom fighter.
The order by the bench of Justice Nazmul Ahsan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader came on Tuesday (May 13) after hearing a petition.
Deputy Attorney General ABM Abdullah Al Mahmud Bashar, who represented the state, told the media after the hearing that the court said certificates can be forged, but not freedom fighters.
“The judges said, using the word ‘fake’ before freedom fighter is equivalent to insulting the freedom fighter,” he said.
If anyone violates the order, he or she will be summoned, said the court.
Referring to Muktijoddha Council Act, 2002, the court said it has been clearly stated that if a person claims to be a freedom fighter with false certificate, then it is a crime or offence.
