A man has been killed in Dhaka in what the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) described as shootout.
The incident was reported around 2.30am on Wednesday (May 8) at Agargaon, said RAB.
The deceased has been identified as Ashraf. RAB said he had been a professional drug trader.
“We received a tip-off that a car carrying drugs was coming into Dhaka. In preparation, we set up three check-posts in the city,” RAB-2 captain Lt Col Ashik Billah told Bangla Tribune.
“Ashraf and his cohorts tried to speed past the Gabtoli check post in a private car. At this point, we chased them. Suddenly they turned the car to Agargaon from Shyamoli. There was another checkpost at Agargaon area. When the miscreants saw another check-post there, they shot at the RAB personnel stationed there. They assumed that the RAB stationed at the post would move away if they shot at them (RAB). But they held their position. At this point the car lost control and upturned after bumping against a nearby road separator,” said Billah.
RAB said gunshots were fired in their direction after the car was upturned. The elite forces fired back in retaliation.
“Two of them managed to get away. We found one of them and took him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital, where the doctor declared him dead,” he said.
“A pistol, four rounds of ammunition, a magazine and 500 bottles of phensedyl were seized from the scene,” added the elite force official.
