The High Court has ordered a probe into the ‘death’ of lawyer Polash Kumar Roy, who died after being burnt in a prison in Panchagarh.
The order calls for a judicial inquiry into the incident by a magistrate under the supervision of Panchagarh's chief judicial magistrate. They are asked to submit a report within 30 days of receiving the order.
Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil passed the order along with a rule after hearing a petition filed by lawyer Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon on Wednesday (May 8).
The court said an investigation is required to determine whether Polash attempted to suicide or if there were any other causes behind the incident.
On Mar 25, Panchagarh lawyer Polash Kumar Roy staged a hunger strike demanding the withdrawal of a case lodged by the Kohinoor Chemical Company. Later, he organized a human chain but locals, alleging that he had made a slander against the prime minister, handed him over to the police.
Polash was sent to prison and he was supposed to be sent to Dhaka on Apr 26. However, he sustained burn injuries over 47 percent of his body.
For better treatment, he was admitted to the Burn Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where he died while undergoing treatment on Apr 30.
