The holy month of Ramadan has started and doctors have said that those who are physically well can fast but those who aren’t should consult doctors first.
Professor of the cardiology department of BSMMU, Dr. Harisul Huq, says: “Since it’s very hot now, people who fast need to take plenty of water during Iftar and sehri; also, oily and greasy food need to be avoided.”
People who need to take medicine and those suffering from kidney diseases shouldn’t fast, he added.
If a patient has to eat three times, then it’s not essential to fast.
Those on regular medicines should not fast because if they do, their blood pressure may fluctuate, leading to further complications.
I also tell people who suffer from recurrent urine infection to refrain from fasting and the same advice is for diabetics who face hypo, he added.
President of the Bangladesh Health Rights Movement, Dr. Rashid e Mahbun, says: “Those who have medical complications should talk to doctors first and then fast.”
Registrar of the surgery department of Shahid Suhrawardy Hospital, Dr Rajib De Sarkar, says: “Many patients come for surgery and most of them have to be given intravenous saline so they cannot fast.”
For outdoor patients, we fix the medicine taking time so they can take them during Ifar and Sehri.
