Fix risky school buildings by three months: HC

Rights group Law and Life Foundation filed the writ seeking 10 million in compensation to the family of a third-grader who was killed after a portion of the school ceiling collapsed on him in Barguna’s Amtali upazila on Apr 6. FILE PHOTOThe High Court (HC) has asked the authorities concerned to conduct a survey to identify the risky buildings of primary and high schools and madrasas across the country and make those safe and environment-friendly after renovation in the next three months.

The HC also asked Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) secretary, and Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) chief engineer and additional chief engineer to report to it within the stipulated time.
A HC bench of justices JBM Hassan and Md Khairul Alam passed the order after hearing on a writ petition on Tuesday (May 7).
The court fixed Aug 21 for passing further order on this issue.

The writ also sought Tk 1 million in compensation to the families of each victim who sustained injuries at the incident at Barguna’s Choto Bogi PK Government Primary School.
