Hawkers demonstrate blocking Gulistan roads

Around 1,500 hawkers from the Gulistan, New Market, and Paltan areas gathered to protest after being evicted from footpaths.Hawkers have blocked the roads in Dhaka’s Gulistan for a meeting with South City mayor to press their demand for running businesses on the footpaths ahead of the Eid.
Hundreds of hawkers took to the street around 11am and are demonstrating blocking the street halting traffic on one of the busiest areas in the capital.
"Around 1,500 hawkers from the Gulistan, New Market, and Paltan areas gathered to protest after being evicted from footpaths,” Paltan police OC Mahmudul Haque told Bangla Tribune.
Additional police forces have been deployed in the area to avoid any untoward incident.
The city authorities evicted street vendors from footpaths in Gulistan and New Markets over an year ago.
After the eviction, they were assured an audience with the South City Mayor Sayeed Khokon to find a solution.
The hawkers have gathered to know on Monday when they would be able to sit with him and have surrounded the Dhaka South City Corporation offices.
