To minimise the indiscriminate stopping of buses to pick and drop passengers, the DMP has fixed designated stoppages. However, a recent survey shows that the stoppages are being used by private cars, CNGs and rickshaws.
In several areas, designated parking for buses have been overtaken by street hawkers, making optimum use of lax law enforcement.
The aim of the drivers is to get passengers and they usually stop on the roads to pick up people.
DMP officers say that drivers hardly use stoppages while passengers say that the stoppages are unclean and many are occupied by hawkers.
While visiting the Science Laboratory bus stand it was found that private cars were parked at bus stops while the buses were picking up passengers recklessly.
The passengers are also to blame for the slipshod attitude of drivers regarding bus stop rules because they signal buses to stop on the road without considering the risks. Some ask the bus to slow and then run to get up.
Some young people who use the bus regularly, say, “We usually run to get up on the bus because the number of buses is inadequate.”
DMP’s additional commissioner, Mir Rezaul Alam, tells Bangla Tribune, “The city corporation has to look in the occupation of designated bus stops by private cars and hawkers.”
It’s also the duty of the city corporation to keep the stoppages clean, he added.
Communication officer of DSCC, Uttam Kumar, adds, “A meeting was held in this regard on 3 April and BTRC officials were told to ensure that their buses stopped at the marked spots.”
