The Appellate Division Thursday has extended the HC stay order on BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s bail and fixed Jun 24 as the next hearing date.
It also instructed the state counsellors to file regular leave-to-appeal application against the High Court bail order for Khaleda Zia.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain gave the order.
Attorney General Mahbub-e Alam represented the state at the court while lawyers Khandakar Mahbub Hossain, AJ Mohammed Ali, Joynul Abedin and others moved for Khaleda Zia.
On May 28, the High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice JBM Hasan granted six-month interim bail for the BNP chief in the two cases. The Supreme Court’s Chamber Judge Justice Hasan Foez Siddique froze the High Court’s order the next day when the State moved against it.
It had fixed May 31 for hearing of the State’s appeals against the decision at the Appellate Division’s full bench.
Release of the former Prime Minister, Khaleda Zia, who is now behind the bar, is now unlikely as she is shown arrested in several other cases.
Cases against Khaleda
Khaleda was named in a case filed for carrying out an arson attack on a bus in Chouddagram of Cumilla district during the BNP-led alliance’s movement on February 2, 2015.
Seven people were killed and 20 to 25 others injured in the arson attack.
On the following day, police filed a murder case accusing the BNP chief.
The BNP chief sought bail after she was shown arrested in the case on April 5 this year.
Khaleda also named in another case filed under Special Power Act for instigating vandalism and arson attack on a covered van in Choddogram area on Dhaka-Chattogram Highway on January 25 in 2015.
