Shirina Akter

A Bangladeshi domestic maid in Oman has complained that her employer physically and mentally harasses her.

Shirina Akter went to Oman in March and on her behalf, her sister Mamtaz Akter sent a written complaint to Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment on May 9, but no action has been taken so far.

Second Secretary of Bangladesh mission in Oman Anwar Hossain told the Bangla Tribune Wednesday, “We haven’t received any letter from the ministry. We would have definitely taken action had we known.”

He said, “Now you have informed us and we will definitely speak to her and do whatever necessary.”

Mamtaz Akter said, “Shirina tells us that she is facing ill-treatment by her employer. We informed the ministry and the recruiting agency but nobody is taking any action.”

In the written complaint to the ministry, it was narrated that Shirina went to Oman through Masud Jamil Overseas, a recruiting agency, in March as a domestic maid.

After her arrival, she has been facing physical and mental harassment by her employer.

She is very sick and requested for her repatriation, otherwise, she would commit suicide.
