Two students of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University have claimed that their complaints of sexual harassment by the chairman of their own department came to nothing.
The university authority says that it did not receive any complain.
However, VC of the university, Dr. Khondokar Nasir Uddin, says that there was another complaint against the same teacher who was warned verbally.
The students in question say that they lodged complaints on 25 January and 12 February and when they did not getting any prevention, posted the matter on Facebook.
Meanwhile the accused teacher asked the students to produce proof.
One of the students who claims to have become a victim of abuse, says, “We demanded punishment; later, many told us that if that teacher lodged a defamation case against us we would be in trouble.”
Our guardians wanted to meet the university administration but failed, said the student.
Teacher of the department of computer science and engineering, Nesarul Huq, says, “After the students informed us, we told the proctor and talked to the accused teacher who refuted the allegations.”
However, the proctor Ashiquzzaman Bhuiyan says that he is not aware of any complaints.
Meanwhile, the VC, Nesarul Huq, says that after he got the complaint, the accused teacher was warned verbally with orders given to ensure that the teacher did not get the chance to supervise any female student.
If there’s any more complaint then the accused person will lose the post of chairman and then the right to teach, added the VC.
Girls have been told not to come to campus at odd hours, said the VC.
He further said that no formal complaint was lodged in February and surmised that possibly the girls raised the matter only on Facebook.
“If we get a complaint then we try to settle it immediately.”
