Chinese national held with 5.5 kg gold at Dhaka Airport

File photo.Customs officials have arrested a Chinese national with 5.56 kg of gold at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

The arrestee, identified as Ruan Jinfeng, 43, came from Dubai on an Emirates Airlines flight which landed at the Dhaka Airport around 8am Sunday (Mar 24), Customs House Deputy Commissioner Othello Chowdhury said.

“On a tip-off a Customs team followed him from the boarding bridge. After crossing the green channel, he denied carrying any products with duty-tax applicable on them, when asked. Then his luggage was screened though the scanner which revealed presence of metal objects in it,” the Customs official said.

Later, a total of 48 gold bars were found concealed within charger light batteries.

Approximate market value of the gold bars is estimated at Tk 27.9 million.

“The Chinese man will be charged under The Customs Act, 1969 and Special Power Act,1974, before he is handed over to the Airport police,” added Chowdhury.

Earlier on Mar 13, two other Chinese nationals was handed to the police by the Customs on charges of gold smuggling.
