Water taxis in Hatirjheel have proven to be immensely popular among commuters living and working in nearby areasThe High Court (HC) has issued a rule asking all the establishments, including restaurants, beyond the layout plan of the Hatirjheel-Begunbari project should not be demolished.
The rule also asked why the respondents shouldn’t be directed to take steps so that no more establishments beyond the layout plan could be constructed in the future.
The bench of Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal issued the rule after hearing a supplementary petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) on Wednesday (Feb 27).
Seven people including RAJUK chairman and Hatirjheel-Begunbaria project director have been made respondent to the rule.
In September of 2018, the High Court gave orders to take down the structures that are beyond the approved layout after hearing a writ on the matter.
At the same time, a rule was also issued asking why the respondents’ failure to take down the structures shouldn’t be declared illegal.
The landowner’s later challenged the order and the Appellate Division issued a status quo on the matter and ordered the HC to dispose off the rule within two months.
“The first rule didn’t include demolition of the structures,” said Manjil Morshed, who represented the petitioners.
He added that the supplementary petition was filed seeking the demolition of these illegal establishments.
