An alleged drug peddler has been killed at the capital’s Gulistan in what the police described as a shootout.
The incident was reported early on Wednesday (Feb 27), east of Mohanagar Natya Mancha at Gulistan, said police.
The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Md Kamal who police claim is a listed drug peddler.
“Police received a tip-off that a group of drug peddlers were gathered at the eastern end of Mohanagar Natya Mancha for trading drugs,” said Paltan police OC Md Mahmudul Haque.,
“As soon as police reached the spot, the drug peddlers opened fire and police retaliated in self defence,” he added.
“When the criminals fled, police found Kamal on the spot and sent him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the doctor declared him dead,” said Haque.
“There were at least 14 narcotics cases against him with Ramna and Paltan police,” he said.
Police said that they have seized three rounds ammunition, a gun and various kinds of drugs from the scene.
