Today Dhaka Metropolitan Police (traffic) has caught a vehicle used by Shahjahan Ali Molla, a PSC member for wrong-lane driving and filed case against the driver. However, Shahjahan Ali Molla was not present there.
In the last few days drives conducted by the DMP (Traffic) against wrong-lane driving, police caught many vehicles of government officials and a number of cars used by big shots, including state minister and lawmaker and the drivers were sued for violating traffic rules.
Driver Rafiqul Islam was driving the car (Dhaka Metro B-13-2248) very quickly towards the Hotel Ruposhi Bangla area from Kakrail area using the wrong lane. Senior superintendents of Dhaka Metropolitan Traffic Police stopped the car on Hare Road filed a lawsuit against the driver's driving license.
The driver told the police that he was instructed by his boss to drive fast and that’s why he used the wrong lane.
DMP (traffic) conducted the drive on Hare Road on Wednesday evening between 5pm and 7:30pm and caught and sued 44 vehicles including CID's ASP's private microbus, vehicle of an official of the water development board, a RAJUK staff bus, private car of Bijoy TV, 27 motorcycles, 8 CNGs and a bus of a private institution.
DMP Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Mosleh Uddin Ahmed said, ‘Since July last year DMP Traffic Division has been conducting drives to take actions against the people who drive in the wrong lane violating the traffic rules.’
‘Drive in the wrong lane is a long-time habit of the people. Whenever there is a traffic jam on the road, they try to drive in the wrong lane which causes more jam. Traffic division has become strict to reduce traffic jam and keep discipline on the road.’
Alauddin, an assistant commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Traffic Police Ramna zone, said. ‘Only ambulances with patients are allowed to drive in the opposite lane. Except them, whoever tries to drive in the wrong lane are sued for violating traffic rules.’
10 thousand cases per month!
In every month an average of 10 thousand cases is filed for wrong-lane driving.
According to the statistics of DMP 116,026 cases were from July 2016 to July 2017 for using the wrong lane. Apart from this, more than 20,000 cases have been filed in August and September this year. Total 421 cases have been filed against the vehicles in the wrong lane in the DMP area yesterday (Tuesday).
An official of DMP's Traffic Division said that since July last year, cases were being filed strictly against the incidents of wrong-lane driving. Earlier, the VIPs, government cars, police, and newsmen were given exemption. But from the last month (September) the law is being implemented as equal for all and nobody is getting any exemption.
