The Supreme Court has scrapped the appeal of seven BNP and one independent candidate to get their nominations reinstated, quashing their hopes of running for the Dec 30 polls.
The order was given by the Chamber court Justice Nuruzzaman Noni on Monday (Dec 24).
The candidates, whose nomination cancellations were upheld by the court are: Faridul Kabir of Jamalpur-4, Md Fazlur Rahman of Joypurhat-1, M A Abdul Majid of Jhenaidah-2, Abu Sayeed Chad of Rajshahi-6, engineer Moslemuddin of Brahmanbaria-4, Khondokar Abu Ashfaq of Dhaka -1 and Tamijuddin of Dhaka-20.
The court has also upheld the nomination cancellation of independent candidate Mahmud Hassan Sumon of Mymensingh -8.
Shah Majurul Huq moved for the Election Commission (EC) while Barrister Ruhul Kuddus Kajal moved for the defendants.
Previously the High Court (HC) had stayed the nomination of these candidates after hearing petitions seeking the stay on grounds that they had not resigned from their executive posts of upazila chairmen.
The candidates had in turn moved the Chamber Judge’s court seeking a stay on the HC order but their plea was scrapped.
