Detective Branch (DB) have detained two supporters of BNP leader Mirza Abbas along with Tk 400,000 in Dhaka.
The men, identified as Shahid and Muhid, were detained from near the Barakah General hospital in the capital’s Shahjahanpur area around 2:30pm on Monday (Dec 24), DB Additional Deputy Commissioner (east) Atikul Islam told Bangla Tribune.
According to DB, the detainees were supporters of Mirza Abbas, who is contesting the 11th general election from Dhaka 8 constituency.
Speaking to media, Islam said: “We received information that Mirza Abbas’ brother Mirza Khokon has been sending cash from abroad for election campaign expenditures.”
“A DB team went to Mirza Abbas’ residence in Shahjahanpur to look into the allegation.
“We found that some men were handing out cash to voters. We caught two of them red-handed while the rest managed to flee the scene,” he said.
Legal action would be taken against the perpetrators, Atikul added.
BNP National Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas told the media, "Attacks and cases on our people are becoming not enough for them [government]. Now they are coming up with new and baseless accusations.
"Voters do not sway with Tk 500 or Tk 1,000. The time of buying votes is long gone. Our voters will vote for us without taking any money," he added.
