Currently, female candidates with Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) or equivalent can apply for assistant teacher jobs in state-run primary schools. Graduates will be only allowed to apply for female assistant teachers in state-run primary schools.
The government has also decided to make the appointment of 20 percent science teachers mandatory.
Currently, female candidates with Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) or equivalent can apply for the jobs. However, male candidates require to be graduates.
The educational qualification is being revised by amending the 2013 government policy for appointment of primary school teachers.
The revision came three months after the Directorate of Primary Education (DPE) published the advertisement for assistant teachers for government primary schools on Jul 30 this year.
In 2013, the government made HSC mandatory from Secondary School Certificate (SSC) amending the 1991 policy.
Secretary to the Primary and Mass Education Ministry Akram-Al-Hossain told Bangla Tribune that the Cabinet approved the ministry’s proposal to raise qualification requirements for female candidates.
The Cabinet gave its nod on Sunday (Sept 30).
“The revised policy also makes the appointment of 20 percent science teachers mandatory in the government primary schools,” said Hossain.
The secretary, however, did not disclose any specific date to issue a gazette notification on the matter.
At present, the assistant teachers are graded third class officials. Assistant teachers at government primary schools get salaries on the Tk 10,200 (trained) and Tk 9,700 (untrained) scales under the National Pay Scale 2015.
According to Primary School Survey 2017, the number of government primary schools has stood at 133,901 with employing 557,000 teachers including 351,863 female teachers.
At present, female candidates enjoy 60 percent reservation for these posts.
