A tussle of social prestige between teenage gangs led to the killing of Mehedi Hasan Shuvo in Dakkhinkhan, police said.
Shuvo died in hospital after he was beaten up and stabbed by rival group members on Aug 1, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Masudur Rahman told media on Sunday.
The clash between the groups ensued after one Kawsar addressed Mehedi as ‘tui’, an expression often deemed denigrating in conventional use of the word, police found after arresting eight suspects over the incident.
The arrestees are Saif, Monir, Arafat, Saiful, Meherab, Apel, Sifat and Sohel.
A Swiss gear knife was recovered from the suspects.
Rahman said that two teenage gangs called ‘Arafat group’ and ‘Shanto group’ were reported to be active in the Dakhhinkhan’s Chairmanbari Nogoria area. The victim was a member of the latter.
Victim’s family lodged a case with Dakkhinkhan police on Sept 1.
Police apprehended the suspects from Sylhet and Dinajpur, he added.
