The cabinet has approved the draft ‘Road Transport Act 2018’ with provision of five years sentence and Tk 5 lakh fine.
Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said this to the media after the meeting at the secretariat on Monday.
After delaying it for more than a year, the draft was placed before the Cabinet amid student protests for safe roads
The secretary said the new laws contain several new provisions and it would help to bring discipline on the road.
In March last year, the draft law received the cabinet’s initial nod and it took more than a year to be vetted by the law ministry.
The transport leaders with some of them in the government blocked the law after the cabinet had passed the draft with harsher punishment for traffic rules violations such as driving without licence.
