Police declare ‘Traffic Week’ from SundayAmid ongoing protests by students demanding safer roads, Bangladesh Police have announced to observe ‘Traffic Week’ across the country from Sunday.
The announcement came on Saturday by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia at a media call, where he vowed to take a tough line on traffic violators.
He thanked students for their initiative to maintain and regulating traffic rules, but said it was also disrupting vehicular movement and leaving commuters suffering.
“We salute the students for what they have done and giving us the moral boost to do the thing what we should have done long ago. They have inspired us to strengthen punishments for offences,” said the DMP chief.
Announcing the launch of a ‘Traffic Week’ on Sunday, he said, “From tomorrow police will maintain all the traffic rules strictly, so now I urge the students to go back to their schools.”
Vested quarters are infiltrating the protests to diver the movement and instigating students to resort to violence, the DMP boss said.
“Intelligence agencies reported a sudden rise in sales of school uniforms, which clearly suggests a plot against the students,” he told the media call at the DMP headquarters.
Describing the students’ initiative as ‘noble’, Mia said, “They want discipline in the runaway transport sector. The government supports them. But based on intel and social media monitoring, we are certain of infiltration.”
