Protesting students have stopped a car with diplomatic license plate carrying two Swedish nationals as demonstrations demanding safer roads continue in Dhaka, said police.
The incident was reported from the Dhaka’s Shahbag intersection on Saturday.The protests entered the seventh straight day Dhaka with students regulating traffic, checking documents of drivers and vehicles as part of their campaign.
Witnesses said around 12:30pm, the car was crossing the key Dhaka intersection of Shahbagh when the protesters signaled it to stop, but instead of pulling over, it attempted to drive away.The students managed to stop the car, when the police intervened and took the vehicle to the nearby Shahbagh Police Station.
Police’s Ramna Zone Assistant Deputy Commissioner Md Azim said that they the two foreigners work for the UN. “The two Swedish nationals are refusing to get out of the car. We are getting in touch with the local UN offices.”On July 29, two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment School and College – Diya Khanam Mim and Abdul Karim Rajib, were killed as a bus ploughed into a group of students while waiting for transport at a stoppage on the Airport Road.
Students in Dhaka as well as in other part of the country took to the streets since then with transport owners and workers beginning an unplanned strike from Aug 2.
The government has said that it accepts the protesters’ demands and urged them to return home.
