Amid protests by students demanding safer roads, a college girl has been killed in Gazipur after a covered van ran over her.
The incident was reported around 12pm on Saturday on the Dhaka-Mymensing Highway at the district’s Barabari area.
Angry locals blocked the highway immediately and set fire to the vehicle as well as nabbed the driver before beating him, said police,Twenty-one-year-old Farzana Alam Mim, who studied at the Safiuddin Sarker Academy and College in Gazipur’s Tongi, was hit by the covered van as she was trying to cross the road.
She was rushed to the state-run hospital in Tongi, where the doctors declared her dead.
Assistant Superintendent Saleh Uddin Ahmed of the Tongi Traffic Police said that the locals have blocked the highway before setting the vehicle to fire.
The driver, who was beaten by the angry mob, was taken to the local Tairunnesa Medical College Hospital, where he received first aid.
