Expressing disappointment over incidents of electoral code of conduct violation, Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar called for "immediate measures" to restore the people's faith on the Commission.
Copies of the unofficial note, the third over the upcoming Dhaka city polls until Monday Jan (20), to Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda have been also forwarded to the returning officers of the Dhaka North and South cities.
“It's imperative to take immediate steps against violations of the electoral code of conduct to restore the people's faith in the commission,” reads the note.
Commissioner Talukdar claimed that there were a number of allegations over the affidavits filed by the candidates and the Commission's inactivity in verifying those is tainting the constitutional body's image.
Referring to his Jan 13 not over barring MPs from polls campaign, Talukdar wrote," According to media reports, an MP, responsible of coordination the party's campaign, is continuing with his activities while another lawmaker has announced to hold political rallies across Dhaka city over the Mujib Year. It's imperative that the EC issues a circular with specific instructions addressing the issue."
Referring to a newspaper advertisement of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) on national daily Prothom Alo on Monday over mosquito control activities in 2019, the commissioner said it was "nothing but a campaign of the outgoing mayor's successes" before recommending actions against responsible DNCC officials.
