Govt to increase compensation for air travel disasters

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addresses a cabinet meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office in Dhaka on Monday (Jan 20, 2020).PID.The government has approved a draft law to raise the compensation for losses of passengers, baggage and goods during air travel.

The decision was taken at the weekly cabinet meeting, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, at the premier's office on Monday (Jan 20).

Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam briefed reporters after the meeting.

The cabinet secretary said the meeting approved the draft law Air Transportation (Montreal Convention) Act 2020, which calls for an increase in compensation for passengers in case of death or injury from accidents and loss of baggage during air travel.

Apart from that, the meeting also approved in principle the draft of Bangladesh Travel Agency (Enlistment and Control) (Amendment) Act 2020, Iodized Salt Act 2020, and Chittagong Port Authority Act 2019. 

The cabinet also approved observing National Sports Day on April 6 in line with the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.

The meeting also recommended clarifying the quota distribution system in direct recruitment for the non-cadre eighth and above grade posts by amending the circular in this regard.
