Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader speaking at a program on Thursday (May 30). FILE PHOTOA senior minister has said there was no discussion within the government on the legal proceedings including the issuance of the arrest warrant against 10 people including Prothom Alo Editor and Publisher Motiur Rahman.
“It’s is the court who issues the arrest warrant against [Rahman], not the government. Everything has happened as per the courts’ orders and the government can’t instruct the court, too,” Road Transport Minister Obaidul Quader said on Monday (Jan 20).
Quader said, “Lawsuit has been filed as an incident occurred. The accused secured bail [from the court] after court issues arrest warrant.
“Everything here is a matter of the court,” he added.
Earlier in the day, the High Court granted Matiur Rahman and four others an anticipatory bail in a case over the death of a Dhaka Residential Model College student, who was electrocuted during an event organised by the newspaper’s magazine for juveniles 'Kishor Alo' on the school campus.
On Jan 16, a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate ordered arrests of ten people, including the newspaper's Associate Editor Anisul Huq who edits the Kishor Alo magazine.
On Nov 1 last year, ninth-grader Nayeemul Abrar was electrocuted by a power generator during a Kishor Alo- organised event.
The accident happened when Nayeemul, unfortunately, went close to the live wires set up for a power generator behind the main stage.
As soon as he was electrocuted, the organisers took him to a medical camp set up at the venue. He was then taken to the Universal Medical College Hospital at Dhaka's Mohakhali, where the doctors declared him dead.
The teenager's father Md Mojibur Rahman started a case on Nov 6 alleging his son died "due to negligence."
