"Any complaints on possible errors, claims or applications of amendment over the draft will have to be filed within 15 days. The revising authorities will resolve those within the next seven days," EC Assistant Secretary Md Mosharraf Hossain said on Wednesday (Jan 20).
The updated draft voter list would be displayed in the boards of the concerned district election officer's office, upazila election officer's office, ward commissioner's office, municipality, union council and in all cantonments on Jan 20, according to an EC letter forwarded to concerned offices across the country.
The Voters' List Act requires the electoral roll to be updated between Jan 2 and Jan 31 every year. However, a failure to comply with this stipulation will not invalidate the electoral roll.
Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda, however, had said that they will publish the final list on Mar 1, marking Voters Day. The existing law has been forwarded to the law ministry for amendment, according to officials.
The Commission has gathered data of 9.5 million citizens to update the voter list.
It has registered prospective voters aged between 15 and 18 years old in November after collecting their photographs, finger prints and running iris scans.
They will be enrolled in the voter list in phases from 2020 to 2022. Accordingly, as many as 112.5 million citizens will be eligible to cast ballots at the 12th national election, up from 104.2 million at the 2018 polls.
