The foreign ministry’s Myanmar wing Director General Delowar Hossain handed over the list to Myanmar envoy to Bangladesh U Lwin Oo on Tuesday (Oct 15).
“We have given a list of 50,506 Rohingyas this time,” a government employee told Bangla Tribune.
Previously Bangladesh handed over a list of over 55,000 Rohingyas who fled Myanmar’s Rakhine state following a military crackdown in 2017.
The government official said that the citizenship status of the 12,000 out of the 55,000 have been scrutinized and Myanmar has accepted 8,700 as citizens.
“They have identified 68 of them as terrorists,” he said and added that Myanmar was sluggish in the process that Bangladesh was trying to speed up.
He said that in a meeting between the foreign ministers of Bangladesh, China, and Myanmar, they were told to speed up the process.
Another government official wishing to remain anonymous said, “Myanmar had initially objected to the process through which the list was being prepared.”
He added that they have no issued with the way it was being prepared now.
