A week into the High Court order on removing expired medicine from the market by 30 days, the government has moved to destroy the drugs by Jul 2.
The decision came from a meeting on Sunday (Jun 23) between the Directorate General of Drug Administration and others stakeholders including manufactures, importers as well as representatives from consumers rights directorate and law enforcement agencies.
“All stakeholders have agreed on destroying expired drugs. Drug manufacturers and pharmacies will co-operate each other. They have been told to report us after the completing the process,” Director General Md Mahbubur Rahman of the drug administration told Bangla Tribune.
Sources confirmed it has been decided that pharmaceutical companies will pull off expired medicines from drug stores through their own mean and destroy them in an environmentally safe manner.
Following the procedure, pharmaceuticals companies will have to file a report to the drug administration directorate, they said.
On Jun 18, the court ordered authorities to confiscate and destroy all expired medicines from drug stores within a month.
It also directed the government to form a committee to identify sellers, suppliers, and hoarders of expired medicines.
