Probe on furnishing Rooppur apartments by Jun 30

The panels, formed over the allegation of abnormally high prices of articles being used to furnish apartments in multi-storey buildings at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Project (RNPP) in Pabna, will file their reports by Jun 30.
“We want to conduct a thorough investigation… Hopefully, we will receive the reports within Jun 30 and it will be made public,” Housing Minister SM Rezaul Karim told media in Dhaka on Sunday (Jun 23).
“If allegations against the people responsible are found true they will face action,” the minister warned.
On May 19, the housing ministry formed two probe committees to investigate the scam three days after a media report revealed cost-related anomalies in the housing project Green City of the RNPP project.
The report stirred controversy, drawing harsh criticism from all quarters.
On May 22, the PWD withdrew its Pabna office executive engineer, Md Masudul Alam, who was in charge of the housing project. He was later attached to the PWD headquarter in Dhaka.
According to the report, the purchase prices of various household articles, used to furnish the RNPP project apartments, were higher than market prices. The moving costs were also abnormally high.
It said one pillow was bought at Tk 5,957, and it cost Tk 760 to move it to the apartment, while an electric stove reportedly cost Tk 7,747 and the movers were paid Tk 6,650 to move it from the bottom floor to upstairs.
Moreover, an electric kettle was bought at Tk 5,313, and its moving cost was Tk 2,945; and an electric iron bought at Tk 4,154 was moved upstairs at a cost of Tk 2,945.
