The mortal remains of Additional Inspector General of Police Rowshan Ara Begum, who died in a road accident in Congo, have been brought back to Dhaka.
A Turkish Airways flight carrying the coffin arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka around 5:30am on Thursday (May 9), said Additional IGP of police, Shohel Rana, of police headquarters (media and public relations), told Bangla Tribune.
Senior officers of police were also present there, added Rana.
Her first namaz-e-janaza (funeral prayer) was held at Noyatola Jame Mosque in Dhaka’s Moghbazar around 10am.
Rowshan Ara’s second janaza will be held at Moghbazar Jame Mosque around 12pm, and the third will take place at Rajarbagh Police Lines around 1:30pm.
Later, she will be laid to rest at the Azimpur graveyard in Dhaka.
Additional IGP Rowshan Ara Begum, ppm, ndc, was killed in a road accident at on Sunday (May 5), while on a United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The 57-year-old died on the spot.
She was on her way to attend a medal parade of BANFPU, the Bangladesh contingent of formed police unit, when her vehicle collided with a civilian truck.
Born on Jan 1, 1962, Rowshan Ara completed her SSC from Moghbazar's T&T High School and the HSC from Viqarunnisa Nun School and College before enrolling at the University of Dhaka.
After earning a master of social science degree from the University of Dhaka, Rowshan Ara began her professional police career in February 1988 and served in high-profile positions including assistant police commissioner of the Accounts Section, Reserve Office, Traffic Division and Training Unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, the largest police unit of Bangladesh Police.
She was the first woman superintendent of police at the district level in the Bangladesh Police.
She successfully performed her duty as the SP of Munshiganj district from 1998 to 2000.
Rowshan Ara was twice honoured with the “Inspector General Good Services Badge” for playing an important role in controlling terrorist activities, arresting terrorists, and recovering illegal drugs, arms and ammunitions.
