Slain Councillor Ekramul Haque belonged to the Awami League and no one will be spared if it turns out that he’s innocent, says senior ruling party leader Obaidul Quader.
“The home minister has spoken about it as well as I. But let me make it clear again, if investigations reveal that Ekram was innocent, then actions will be taken against those who framed him,” he said on Sunday.

On the night of May 26, Ekram, who was a councillor of the Teknaf municipality in Cox's Bazar, was killed in an alleged shootout with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The elite police unit said he was involved with yaba smuggling, but the family denied and claimed he was killed in cold blood, not in a gunfight.   



Road Transport Minister Quader’s remarks came while speaking to the media after the signing of a deal over the Metrorail project.
“Were the senior RAB officers spared over the Narayanganj (seven-murder) incident? They have been sentenced to death,” he said replying queries from reporters.
Reiterating that the people praised the anti-drug drive, the Awami League general secretary said, “The BNP is talking gibberish due to disappointment over not taking part in the polls and their failure to wage a movement.”
On the joint statement by intellectual expressing concerns over the ‘extra-judicial killings’, Quader said everybody has the right to criticise.
“The raid is to stop the menace of drugs, which is destroying the young generation. Let the critics do their jobs. We are doing this for the sake of the people and their future — the youth.”
Asked whether there was an international pressure over the war on drugs, Cabinet member Quader said the government will not give in to any kind of pressure.
“The UN is monitoring; Let them as they have every right to do so. It’s the same for any other friendly foreign nations,” he said adding that the crackdown will continue until the menace is contained.
