Syed WaliullahRenowned author Syed Waliullah’s son has sued three people, including his father’s cousin for committing fraud over his family property.
On Sunday, Iraj Waliullah, who lives in France, filed a criminal with a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court against the author’s first cousin Kamal Ziaul Islam, his wife Khadiza Islam and son Rayhan Kamal.
Metropolitan Magistrate Satyabrata Sikder heard the matter and ordered the police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the matter.
Iraj brought charges of fraud and property embezzlement against the three.
Iraj accused his father’s cousin Kamal Ziaul Islam, his wife Khadija Islam, and their son Rayyan Kamal in the case over ‘breach of trust, property embezzlement and fraud’, Rana Dasgupta, chief lawyer for the petitioner, toldbdnews24.com.
According to the case details, on Mar 12, 1970, one Ashraf Ali transferred the deed of a 22-katha land plot in Gulshan to Syed Waliullah upon clearance from the then-capital development authority, DIT.
Ali had leased the land from DIT.
Syed Waliullah died while working in Paris in 1971.
The deed on land plot was then transferred to Waliullah’s French wife Anne-Marie Waliullah and their two children Iraj and Simine.
On Sept 11, 1981, the family gave the power of attorney to Kamal Ziaul Islam to look after the real estate.
But the accused took loans and mortgages against the property by producing a fake power of attorney document.
They also moved to build a multi-storey building under their own construction company, Nirman International.
The author of classic novels Lal Shalu and Kaado Nodi Kado, Syed Waliullah was an officer of the Pakistan foreign services in 1951 and the 1960s.
He served at the Pakistan mission in Paris from 1960 to 1967 before working as a UNESCO programme specialist until 1971.
Waliullah was among the Bangladeshi expatriates across the world, who supported the movement of independence from abroad.
