The death of Nusrat Jahan Rafi, the girl who was burnt for standing up to sexual abuse, triggered a storm on social media. Thousands have united to monitor the swift punishment of the perpetrator.
On Thursday (Apr 11), the demand that spread around Facebook was: Nusrat could not be saved, but we must ensure justice.
Feminist writer, Sadia Nasrin, writes: “The girl fought for her honour and died and it’s up to us now to do the rest.”
Other social activists have also called for the swift punishment of the abuser, Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa Principal Siraj-ud-Daula.
Barrister Tureen Afroz, writes: “I demand justice for Nusrat.”
Online activist Arif Rahman, says: “Nusrat has shown that the situation will possibly not change in another 200 years but it’s important to stand up and protest; I have made an oath that till death I will remind all of the need for justice for this killing.”
The victim, a resident of Sonagazi Municipality, went to the local Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa on Saturday (Apr 6) to sit for her Alim exams, equivalent to Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC).
Some students called her to the roof and threatened her to withdraw the case filed against the principal. They set her on fire after pouring kerosene on her when she refused, according to the victim's family.
Police and others rescued her after hearing her cry and took her to Sonagazi Upazila Health complex from where she was shifted to the Feni General Hospital before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
On Monday (Apr 8), she was put on life support at the DMCH burn unit as her condition deteriorated.
