Feni madrasa girl Nusrat loses battle for life

Nusrat Jahan Rafi was brought to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Saturday (Apr 6), hours after an arson attack on her which left her with nearly 80 percent burn injuries.Nusrat Jahan Rafi, the madrasa student from Feni who was allegedly burnt after refusing to withdraw sexual abuse charges against the principal, has died after battling critical injuries for five days.

The 18-year-old died at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 9.30pm on Wednesday (Apr 10), said Dr Abul Kalam Azad of the DMCH burns unit.

Azad, who headed the medical board formed for Nusrat’s treatment, said her condition started to drastically deteriorate from Wednesday morning.

“She had survived despite suffering several cardiac arrests, but died around 9.30pm,” he said.

PHOTO/Sazzad HossainOn Saturday (Apr 6), Nusrat was set on fire by unknown burqa-clad miscreants on the roof of Sonagazi Islamia Fazil Madrasa in reprisal allegedly for levelling sexual abuse charges against the institution's principal Siraj-ud-Daula.

After receiving primary treatment at two Feni hospitals, she was brougth to DMCH the same day with 80 percent burns and put on life support at the intensive care unit on Monday.

Doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital try to console the father of Nusrat Jahan Rafi after the madrasa girl from Feni lost battle for life on Wednesday (Apr 10)Even though Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ordered the authorities to airlift her to Singapore for advanced medical treatment, if necessary, doctors in Singapore and Dhaka concurred that Nusrat's condition did not to allow her to be airlifted.

Nusrat's family said they had been being threatened after bringing sexual harassment charges against principal Siraj last month.
