A court in Feni has remanded three people who have been accused for setting a madrasa student on fire for allegedly refusing to withdraw sexual assault charges against the principal.
Feni Judicial Magistrate Sharafat Uddin on Wednesday (Apr 10) remanded madrasa principal Siraj-ud-Daula on a for seven days, Feni court Inspector Md Jilani told Bangla Tribune.
“Absar Hossain, a teacher of English Department and Arifur Rahman, the victim's classmate, were placed on five-day remands,” he said.
So far, six people have been arrested in connection with the incident, after the victim's brother Mahmudul Hasan filed a case with Sonagazi police on Monday (Apr 8).
The same court on Tuesday placed three others - Nur Hossain, Kefayetullah and Shahidul Islam, on a five-day remand.
The victim, a resident of Sonagazi Municipality, went to the local Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa on Saturday (Apr 6) to sit for her Alim exams, equivalent to Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC).
Some students called her to the roof and threatened her to withdraw the case filed against the principal. They set her on fire after pouring kerosene on her when she refused, according to the victim's family.
Police and others rescued her after hearing her cry and took her to Sonagazi Upazila Health complex from where she was shifted to the Feni General Hospital before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
On Monday (Apr 8), she was put on life support at the DMCH burn unit as her condition deteriorated.
