The Suprobhat bus ran over Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury, the Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) student, while trying to flee another accident spot.
The conductor of the bus, Yasin Arafat was trying to escape at the bus owner’s instruction, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner Abdul Baten said during a media call on Wednesday (Mar 27).
He said that Yasin was arrested on Tuesday (Mar 26) and based on information the bus helper Ibrahim was arrested on Wednesday.
“The bus left Victoria Park area at 5:45 am on Mar 19 when it was being driven by the actual driver Shirazul Islam,” he said.
“While crossing Bashtola, Shazadpur in Gulshan, it ran over Synthia Sultana Mukta, a first-year student of Mirpur Ideal Girls’ Laboratory College; and severely injured her,” he added.
He said that the passengers handed over Shirazul to the police and the bus was parked a few yards away from the scene at the time.
“Yasin called the owner of the bus, who instructed him to drive the vehicle away, fearing that a mob might vandalise it or set it on fire,” Baten said.He added that Abrar was run over by the vehicle as Yasin, who didn’t have a license was in a hurry to escape at the directive of owner Noni Gopal Sarker.
“The police initially assumed that Shirazul Islam was responsible for the second accident but we came to know about the bus being driven by its conductor, after remanding Islam for seven days.”
Baten said that the charge sheet of the case will be produced in court within a month.
Abrar, a first-year student of BUP died in Mar 19 after being hit by a bus in front of Jamuna Future Park. His death sparked a student protest that led to various road blockades and demand for safe roads.
