The number of casualties of recent extrajudicial killings in ‘shootouts with law enforcers’ is increasing at an alarming rate with 71 people killed in nine days since the countrywide anti-drug raid kick-started.
A total of 11 persons, labeled as ‘drug dealers’ by police or RAB, were killed in ‘shootouts with law enforcers’ in eight districts on Saturday night also as part of the countrywide anti-drug raid, according to reports sent by our district correspondents until 10:00 am, Sunday.
Cox’s Bazar correspondent reports, Teknaf Municipality Ward Councilor and alleged drug lord Ekramul Huq was killed on Saturday midnight in a ‘shootout’ with RAB-7.
RAB-7 Company Commander Ruhul Amin confirming the news told the Bangla Tribune:”A gun fight took place around 12:00 am at Noakhalipara area under the municipality between a RAB team and a group of drug dealers. Later, enlisted top drug lord and ward councilor Ekramul Huq’s body was recovered from the spot after the miscreants left the place.”
Teknaf thana Officer-in-Charge Ranjit Kumar Barua said, RAB has handed over Ekram’s body to police and the body has been sent to Cox’s Bazar sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
He was an enlisted yaba dealer of home ministry.
Our Chattoagram correspondent reports, an alleged drug dealer named Raihan Uddin (28) was killed in a ‘shootout with Sitakundu police’ at Naralia Beribadh area under Sitakundu Upazila in the port city on Saturday night.
Confirming the news, Sitakundu thana’s Inspector (investigation) Mojammel Huq said, “Two firearms and 5000 pieces of contraband yaba tablets were recovered from the spot.”
Our Chandpur correspondent reports, a ‘drug dealer’ named Salim was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Hajirdon area on Matlab highway on Saturday night.
Police sources said, a team of police conducted a raid and detained Salim from the spot. Police also fired back in response, injuring Salim seriously on the spot. Duty doctors declared him dead after he was rushed to Matlab health complex.
Noakhali correspondent reports, an alleged drug dealer named Hasan was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at the wee hours of Saturday at Sonaimuri upazila in the district.
Police sources claimed there are 21 cases against the deceased.
AKM Zahirul Islam, Additional Police Super of the district, said Hasan was killed at Ijtema field under Sonaimuri upazila.
Our Khulna correspondent reports, an alleged drug dealer Abul Kalam Molla (40) – hailed from Siddipasha viilage under Avanagar upazila in Jashore – was killed in a shootout at Digholia upazila in the district.
Our Jhenaidah correspondent reports, Shailakupa upazila police recovered a body from Barodaho-Jamtola portion of Jhenaidah-Kushtia highway on Saturday night, raising the number of deceased to three in drug-related recent gunfights in the district.
Shailakupa thana Officer-in-Charge Alamgir Hossain said, “The body was found beside the street. Name and address of the deceased has not been known yet.”
Our Kushtia correspondent reports, a drug dealer’ named Halim Mandal (35) was killed in a ‘shootout’ with police at D-block field in the city.
District police sources said, acting on a tip-off, a team of Model thana police conducted a raid at the spot, triggering a ‘gunfight’ with a group of ‘drug dealers’ present there.
After the miscreants retreated, an injured body was recovered from the spot. Duty doctors declared him dead after being rushed to Kushtia General Hospital.
Halim was an enlisted top drug dealer, the OC added.
One person each was killed in Meherpur, Bagerhat, Mymensing and Thakurgaon districts also on Saturday night in identically similar ‘shootouts’ where law enforcers fired back after being attacked by ‘drug dealers’ at dead of night.
All the deceased have been labeled, like in other districts, by the law enforcers as ‘enlisted drug dealers’.
Hafizul Islam Hafi (45) was killed at Bathanbari field under Garbaria village at Kathuli union in Meherpur; Mitun Biswas (45) was killed at Chinguri area under Chitralmari upazila in Bagerhat; an unidentified youth (25/26) was killed at Kewatkhali Morakhola area in Mymensing; and Rafiqul Islam Taleban (55) was killed at Ranishongkoil upazila in Thakurgaon.
OC Harindranath Sarker of Gangni thana, OC Anukul Biswas of Chitalmari thana and OC Abdul Mannan of Ranishongkoil thana confirmed the respective news.
