Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozzammel Haque has questioned roles of some NGOs working at the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar.
“We have noticed that certain NGOs in the Rohingya camps are working with ill motives,” said the minister before adding, “Evidences have surfaced in our intelligence reports.”
His comments to the media came on Wednesday (Mar 13) after a meeting of the cabinet committee on law and order at the foreign ministry’s conference room.
“You will be surprised to know that the NGOs have paid over Tk 1.5 billion as hotel bills since September. They have spent nearly 80 million as flat and house rents,” Mozzamel said.
“The NGOs are supposed to bring in funds to spend for the Rohingyas, who don’t even get even 25 percent of the money. Over 75 percent is spent as the NGO people’s own expenses,” added the minister.
“This is really unfortunate,” he said adding that the intelligence agencies have been instructed to identify such NGOs.
Asked about some foreign agencies opinions regarding relocating Rohingyas to Bhasan Char, Huq said, “The government’s responsibility is to feed and support the people they have sheltered and ensure security for them. It’s their decision where they will keep the Rohingyas; Bhasan Char or elsewhere.”
“The NGOs responsibility is to oversee if the government is taking care of the humanitarian aspects. If they have any opinion in this regard, the government will consider,” he added.
