Six Dhaka University students who went on a hunger strike since Tuesday (Mar 12) evening are continuing the strike over demands of re-election to Dhaka University Central Students Union (DUCSU).
Initially it was four students who began the hunger strike amid the row over DUCSU polls. Later two others joined in the programme.
They gathered at the base of Raju Sculpture near the Teacher-Student Center (TSC) on Wednesday (Mar 13) morning and said they will continue their protest until their demands are met by the authorities.
“Unless Dhaka University acknowledges that DUCSU election was a farce and declares schedule for re-election, we will continue our hunger strike,” a demonstrator Main Uddin told Bangla Tribune.
Responding to a query, Main said, “We haven’t faced any obstacle to hold our programme."
Rafia Tamanna, one of the protesters and a voter of Shamsunnahar Hall says although she didn’t contest, she’s taking part in the strike as a conscious student to demand a fair election.
“I saw what happened during the Mar 11 election. Our candidates won because we were on our guard all night but everyone knows what happened in Ruqayah Hall and Kuwait-Moitree Hall,” she said.
The 28-year-long wait to DUCSU election was marred in election boycott of all the major panels over allegations of irregularities and vote rigging.
Only Chhatra League was the major panel left contesting in the election.
The opposition panels broke out in protests after boycotting the election demanding re-election and called a student strike.
Proof of irregularities was found in Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall, for which the provost was relieved of his duties. Stashed unstamped ballots were found in Ruqayyah Hall.
The VP-elect Nurul Haque Nur was attacked when the polls was underway and there was another attempted attack on leftists’ panel leader Liton Nandi.
