All of the student bodies, except for pro- Awamil League Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), have boycotted the polls to the Dhaka University Students’ Union (DUCSU) and hall unions alleging large-scale irregularities before calling for a strike on campus from Tuesday (Mar 12).
Flanked by representatives of the panels, Liton Nandi, the vice-president candidate of the Leftists’ coalition, made the announcement before the media at the Madhur Canteen on Monday (Mar 11) after polls opened at 8am.
Representatives of the pro-BNP Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), who were at the press conference, voiced their support. “We are boycotting the farcical polls marred by widespread rigging,” Nandi said before calling for a strike and demanding a fresh election after reconstituting the polls conducting panel.
He also demanded booths at the academic buildings and transparent ballot boxes for the fresh polls.
Following the media call, candidates and their supporters marched to the vice-chancellor’s office, where they have started to demonstrate to press their demands.
