The government has planned to dredge as many as 178 rivers to increase their navigability by 10,000 kilometers, says State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury.
The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) will implement the plan, Chowdhury told parliament on Sunday (Mar 4) in response to a query from Jatiya Party MP Moshiur Rahman Ranga.
Responding to another query, he said, “Several projects involving Tk 40 billion has been taken to increase the navigability of the seaport in Chattogram.
“Of them, major projects are the construction of Potenga Container Terminal and New Mooring Overflow Container Yard, and renovation of Karnaphuli River from Sadar Ghat end to Bakaliya Char end,” said Chowdhury.
