Eight drug dealers were killed in separate gunfights with law enforcing agencies in different districts early Wednesday.
Two killed in Kushtia while one each in Jamalpur, Feni, Cumilla, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat and Thakurgaon districts
The countrywide crackdown on drug dealers is continuing.
The law enforcement agencies also recovered arms, ammunition and drugs from the spots.
Kushtia
Two alleged drug dealers killed in ‘shootouts’ with police in Kushtia on Wednesday.
The incidents took place in Kumarkahli and Bheramera area in the district, the police said.
The victims were identified as Gaffar, 38 and Liton Hossain, 40.
The lawmen found firearms, Yaba pills, cannabis and other contraband drugs from the spots.
The bodies of the top ‘drug dealers’ were sent to Kushtia Medical College Hospital for autopsy, said police.
Cumilla
Another ‘drug trader’ died in Cumilla in a so called gunfight on early hours of Wednesday, police said.
The person was identified as Nurul Islam Isa who was charged with seven drug related cases, said the OC of Cumilla Model police station Md Abu Salam Mia.
A gunfight started with police after a group of drug traffickers had opened fire at the law enforcers at Tikkarchar bridge area around 12.30 am during a raid.
Bullet-hit Isa was declared died when he was taken to the state-run hospital in the district, police added.
Feni
RAB gunned down Faruq Hossain, 39, an alleged drug peddler in a ‘shootout’ in Feni on Tuesday.
Fahim Ahmed, RAB-7 Squadron Leader and Feni camp in-charge told Bangla Tribune that some drug dealers attacked a Rab team when its members were searching a Dhaka bound vehicle in Dadful area.
He said his force retaliated with fire and Faruq got hit.
He was declared dead after being taken to Feni government hospital, he added.
RAB seized 22,000 Yaba pills and firearms from the scene.
Rangpur
An unidentified ‘drug dealer’ has been killed in crossfire with police in Rangpur on Wednesday, according to inspector Moktarul alam of Rangpur police station.
Moktarul said that the ‘gun battle’ was taken place in city’s Hazirhat area in the morning.
A pistol and huge number of contraband Phensidyl were recovered from the spot.
Jamalpur
An unknown man was killed in ‘gun fight’ with police in Jamalpur’s Balughat area on Wednesday morning.
The police is yet to know the identity of the deceased person.
The OC of Jalamalpur police station Rashedul Islam said they got a tip-off and raided the Balighta Madrasa area where the smugglers started firing on them and they retaliated.
Police found 1000 piece of yaba pills, 100 gram heroine and firearms from the scene.
The number of alleged drug peddlers killed in “shootouts” has risen amid anti-narcotic drives by law enforcers across the country.
The incidents made rights activists concerned as they believe killings cannot be the way of tackling the drug menace that has engulfed every tier of the society.
Thakurgaon
One ‘drug peddler’ has been killed in a ‘shootout’ in the district in the wee hours of Wednesday.
The ‘gun battle’ took place at Bhatarbari farm area around 4.00 am, police said.
The dead person was identified as Aftaful Isalm, 38, hailed from Baliadangi Upazila.
Superintendent of police Farhat Ahmed said that a group of drug dealers opened fire at the police team when it raided the farm area with Aftaful.
“Aftaful was caught in the crossfire when police fired in reply”, the senior police officer said.
Police sources also said that the victim was charged with several narcotics cases with police.
Gaibandha
A ‘top drug trafficker’ also caught in ‘crossfire’ in the dawn of Wednesday.
The incident took place at Bisramgachi of Palashbari Upazila, RAB-13 said in a press release.
The ‘drug dealer’ was identified as Raju Mia, 37.
Raju was killed when RAB fired back to a ring of drug traders after being attacked at the area. After the fight he was taken to the local government hospital where doctors pronounced him dead, also read the press release.
Lalmonirhat
Another ‘drug trader’ killed in a shootout dubbed by the law enforcers in the district on Wednesday.
The ‘gun battle’ occurred between police and ‘smugglers’ at Charshiber Kuti area, according to the police.
The victim was identified as Nur Alam, 43. He has been charged with several drug related cases with police, said Lalmonirhat superintendent of police SM Rashidul Huq.
“Acting on information police ambushed a group of drug smugglers around 3.00 am. Police fired back after being shot by the group”, Lalmonirhat OC Mahfuz Alam told the media.
Nur was declared dead by the doctors after being taken him to the state-run hospital with bullet injury.
